Micaëla, CarmeN

Opera Australia

“It would be challenging not to love (and pity) Italian/Australian Rebecca Gulinello as the pious Micaëla. Even before her character is portrayed to us, we are given by her costuming, the 1950s bluebird cardigan and petticoated full skirt, the contrast to the rock rebels. Her clothes speak chastity, her eyes of innocence. Her gestures are demure. Her voice serenades us hopefully, dutifully and with longing for her betrothed. I'm convinced.”

Bel Canto Award 2023

“It was a great honour,” the artist told SBS Italian.

“I feel very close to this music, not only because it’s about singing in my language... Italy is in my blood... The only Australian thing I have is the accent,” the singer jokes.

A rising star in opera, the young artist ended her debut year with a prestigious award that will take her to study in Italy.

Singing arias by Puccini, Mozart and Massenet, Italian-Australian soprano Rebecca Gulinello won the Bel Canto Award 2023, a prestigious award made available by the Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge Foundation to support new opera talent in Australia.

Rebecca didn’t just get the podium but also the audience award, thanks to which she will be able to spend a study trip to Italy at the Georg Solti Accademia in Tuscany next year.”

Rebecca Gulinello Singing in giant theatre in Cockatoo Island

“Carmen is going to be a great show on Cockatoo Island and I'm really excited," Rebecca admits.

"They're doing a really cool production, inspired by rock 'n' roll, incorporating the environment and the industrial area. And the motorbike stunts too."

Opera Australia is completing one of the largest outdoor opera productions ever staged in Australia: George Bizet's Carmen on a giant stage on Cockatoo Island, which includes a motorcycle show prelude.

Italian-born soprano Rebecca Gulinello stars as Micaela in George Bizet's Carmen, which will open Opera Australia's new theatre on Cockatoo Island, the former NSW shipyard that was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010.”

Carmen on cockatoo Island

First time opera; first time opera singer

“The mindset of a singer is also similar to that of a professional athlete. You must maintain a sense of rigour, routine, mental fortitude and humility that enables one the grace to ride the very highs and very lows that come with the journey of this career.”
